3 Killed In 2 Car Wrecks In Marion County; Hixson Couple Who Died On Freeway Were In Argument

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

Three people were killed in two separate wrecks in Marion County.

In one instance in which a Hixson couple was killed on I-24, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said they were arguing and the man was steering with his knees when their SUV went out of control.

A man in the back seat, James P. Wright of Lebanon, Tn., said he was trying to break up the dispute.

All three were ejected from the Nissan SUV. Mr. Wright was taken to Erlanger Hospital.

Thomas W. Smith, 33, and Stephanie Auburn, 29, were killed. One was dead at the scene, while the second died at Grandview Hospital.

No one in the vehicle was buckled up.

The wreck in the median was about four miles past the Kimball exit. The driver over-corrected, causing the vehicle to roll.

Also,  41-year-old Jeffery L. Gibson died in a single-vehicle wreck on Aetna Mountain Road. He was dead at the scene after his SUV went off the right side of the highway and rolled several times.

The victim was not wearing a seat belt and it is believed that speed was a factor in the crash.

One estimate was at least 3,000. Standing together with all of these like-minded souls was overwhelming and humbling.  I have rarely been so happy and so proud of my town.  One question is, why is ... (click for more)
